Below are the names of folks who were nominated by YOU as local role models within the Give category for the 2024 Carteret Curated People's Choice Awards.

Alana Counts

Alicia Parker Smith

  • Alicia is a powerhouse of a business owner, friend and mama! She is always looking for ways to give back to the community, provide a safe and welcoming environment for her clients. She regularly posts information on cosmetics and other self care items to ensure her audience is aware of what they are putting in/on their bodies, as well as providing alternatives to the harsh big name products - especially sunscreen options we all need on the coast! She is always looking for the best and cleanest products to keep her clientele safe and healthy. She manages to do all she does while keeping such a ray of sunshine about herself. You rock, Alicia!

  • She has such a heart for women and young moms. She took over All about Skin Wellness Center and has rebranded to target helping more women in so many ways. Heart of gold.

Amanda McCall

  • She gives everything to our community to instill a love of literacy. I don’t think the woman ever sits, the work she’s done with the Title Wave Bookmobile is absolutely astounding.

  • She started the Title Wave Book Mobile to help children obtain books to read.

  • A selfless supporter of healing mental health and substance abuse.

  • She has coached my son in baseball, is on the board for mhcll, and has helped start up the Morehead softball league! Such a giving human. Love that she loves helping and shaping our youth. Just what Carteret County needs!

Brittany Kelley

  • Brittany has been one of the strongest people in Carteret County over the last year. While having breast cancer, she planned Carteret County’s first run to raise money for Breast Cancer. She is the definition of a hero in more ways than one.

  • Because she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and started the run “Let's Make Pink Just a Color” and all the proceeds were donated back to items needed for cancer patients of Carteret County.

  • for the way that she has been such a warrior through her battle with cancer.

  • She is fighting breast cancer and has been since 2023. She has used this as an opportunity to help those just like her and raise money to purchase needed products and resources for those like her.

  • She has openly shared her battle with breast cancer to help inform people of the good, bad & ugly effects of radiation & chemo. She organized a run/walk to raise money for the local hospital’s cancer center.

Carrie Huber

  • Carrie does so much for the homeless animals and for rescued animals in our county. 

  • Her outreach goes so much farther than Carteret County. She works tirelessly to help animals find their forever homes, AND she works another full-time job as a teacher while doing so.

  • He serves those in his home, his church, and his community with a humble and loving heart. He mows grass for those who can't. He helps with the dinner at church each week where they serve others in the community. He has served as the "ball boy" for the East Carteret High School football team for over 20 years. He even sees his job as a chance to show God's love to others. He is the hardest working person I know. He has a servant's heart and strives to humbly show others the love of God through his actions.

Cecil "Mack" Willis

  • He is a selfless leader and his team managed a massive fire that came too close to Blair Farm. His entire team of guys are absolute professionals.

  • He makes such an effort to support not only Morehead but the whole county far beyond being a fire chief. He is a strong pillar of the community a man we can all rely on to be there for this community.

  • She is always out volunteering and/or doing good with various organizations either on her own, with her daughters, or with Mary Cheatham King Real Estate. She is simply the best!

  • She is a principal at Morehead City Elementary at Camp Glenn. Being the only administrator there she has a lot on her plate. She not only ensures students educational needs are met but more importantly their social/emotional needs. I have watched students excel with her guidance and fairness.

Chuck Linder

  • Chuck leads Morehead City Little League with excellence, providing a top notch baseball experience for the boys and girls in our community. He serves selflessly and is a local hero in my eyes!

  • She does so much for the kids in our community.  She is one of the most loving and giving people I know!

  • She started a nonprofit to send children to summer camp and works full time for the county helping many Seniors in our community.

  • I have known CJ Page for quite some time, and I can confidently say that she embodies the true spirit of a local hero. CJ's unwavering faith, resilience, and selflessness make her an inspiration to all who know her. Despite facing the challenges of battling leukemia, CJ continues to give back to others in remarkable ways. Her dedication to serving her community and uplifting those around her is truly commendable. She has a heart of gold and goes above and beyond to make everyone feel valued and appreciated. What sets CJ apart is not only her generosity but also her unwavering belief in the power of faith.  She draws strength from her faith in the Lord and serves as a beacon of hope for others facing struggles. CJ's positive attitude and contagious spirit have touched the lives of so many, including mine. She is a shining example of resilience, kindness, and grace, and I am honored to recommend her as a local hero.

Dr. Clark Johnson

  • He spends his time keeping all our smiles intact as well as making us smile with his immeasurable kindness. There are many ways over the past decade that he has given back to Carteret County and continues to do so everyday. He is a light in this community, a friend, an exceptional father, and a wonderful example of a local hero.

  • Amazing Teacher, Coach, and mentor. Goes above and beyond for his students, athletes, and club kids.

  • Dedicated teacher, advisor, and coach. He is so involved with making sure students are as successful as possible in and outside of the classroom and helping them prep for college/applications/letters of recommendation/ etc. He has helped students get into college as the first generation for their family, helped students get athletic scholarships, encouraged students to stay in school, helped students during mental crises. He has even helped students retain citizenship through DACA. I'm not sure that the word "No" is in his vocabulary if it involves helping a student/athlete/ or YAG Club member.

Crystal Foy

  • She supports all small businesses while running her own and raising a child with special needs.

Curtis Strange

  • Curtis is a two-time U S Open Champion, World Golf Hall of Famer, Big Rock Blue Marlin board member and cares about our community.

Dale Britt

  • He is the biggest philanthropist I know.

  • Dana gives countlessly to the community.

Daniel Latorella

  • He is the school resource officer at BMS. He left for a short period to work at Cherry Point and came back to Beaufort PD to work as the school resource officer again. It’s truly where his heart is and the community is glad to have him back!

  • Officer Latorella went to part time with the PD for a short time while pursuing other avenues. He quickly realized that his heart is in policing and helping the kids of our community. He is the SRO at BMS and his passion shows in his daily role as SRO. He truly cares about our kids and their futures!

  • Danielle took Backpack Friends from feeding a few local children to 1,000 a week with her volunteers.

  • Danielle planned fundraiser after fundraiser to send the ECHS band to Orlando ALL FREE OF CHARGE for the students. She did not stop until she raised enough for every member!

  • As part of the Emerald Isle PD, he has been outstanding in his new role as the community resource officer for the town and goes above and beyond to provide for the community.

  • She selflessly serves the community trying to help save animals and reunite those who have lost pets.  She is kind and generous with her time and compassion.  She created a page to help promote animal rescue and she partners with all the local rescues!

  • She is the first female head pastor of Ann Street United Methodist. She is the leader we needed when going through a denomination split.

Dr. Denny Lawrence

  • He goes above and beyond for his patients. Always welcoming them and making them feel like they are the only patient he has at that moment. He also contributes and donates to local nonprofits like Morehead City Little League and Carteret County Schools various athletic organizations and needs.

Derek Rivers

  • He’s a really nice guy and is never rude. He is also the owner of Simplistic Sports.

Dexter & Shannon Williams

  • for their dedication to the youth of our entire community through Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

  • Dexter's drive for excellence with his camps and the kids that participate is a stellar example. His energy and personality stands out from the first moment you meet him. He never forgets a name or face and is the first to connect a stranger with a neighbor or friend. He and his family are fine examples of good stewards of the community.

Diane Gianey

  • Diane is dedicated to making Carteret County a better place. She shares her time, talent and treasure with many local non profits. She is a servant leader.

Donnie Griggs

  • He is intelligent, inspired, gifted at preaching and loves his community.

  • Pastor of One Harbor Church. Not only is he a wonderful pastor, but he also works closely with local firefighters and EMS personnel to respond to crises by offering support and comfort to them and the victims of tragedies.

  • Griggs does so much for the community. He helps so many, including the emergency medical staff.

  • She gives of her time and talents at Smyrna and East Carteret and Church and so many other places. Her husband passed away recently and she was so strong and a hero to all of us that know her!

  • She is the most caring and loving person. Very genuine.

Emily Sewell

  • Emily is a local psychotherapist and Cubmaster for Pack 130.

Emma Guthrie

  • Emma Guthrie is a Harkers Island Native who richly enhances the history of The Islander.  Emma (Emmer as she is lovingly called by family members and friends) is a historian who shares her knowledge and vision of Island Life with many in around her community.  She often is asked to attend and participate in events of educational value as she is amazing with telling her account of how Island Life used to be and how it was in the days at Wade Shore/Shackleford Banks/Cape Lookout. At her ripe age of 91 she still goes out in the boat, clams, climbs dunes, and even rock walls with her great grands. She is an amazing woman and is a gem to all who know her. She has contributed so much to many who have written about the history of The Banks and continues to spread her knowledge everywhere she goes.  She also leads a group called "Bring Back The Lights" on Harkers Island and was founded in part to decorate Harkers Island at Christmas time for all to enjoy.  She deserves the spotlight for how much she has contributed to preserving the history of Harkers Island.

  • Emma Guthrie is a Harkers Island Native who enjoys sharing her knowledge and history of Harkers Island. She is often invited to local events to speak on the heritage and culture of Island Folk and happens to be beloved to her family and all who know her. She is talented, as she also creates many crafts out of shells and oysters such as oyster trees and shell wreaths. She is an avid church goer and sings in the choir at her local church.  She, along with others, lead "Bring Back The Lights,” which is an organization formed to enhance Harkers Island during Christmas Time by decorating the entire Island with lights and lovely decor for all to enjoy. She is a phenomenal woman and historian.

Franklin Fulcher

  • After spending over 30 years serving Carteret County as a deputy and eventually Chief Deputy, he has retired. Now, he spends his time working with Law Enforcement offices around Eastern North Carolina ensuring they have the most up-to-date resources. Helping ensure the safety of their officers.

Gene Garner

  • His dedication to our community (Beaufort) and the people in it is inspiring! I could listen to his stories of days past all day! He knows literally everyone and would help anyone. A true Beaufort Native, born and raised.

  • Jodi is one of the most dedicated and caring people I know. She gives her all to her dance studio and the families that are a part of it. She genuinely cares about each dancer and has a way of showcasing their strengths on the stage.

  • for being a teacher and role model to so many by bringing exceptional dance instruction and artistry to the community.

  • She spends all her time working with young ladies in our community to help them become not only better dancers but also better young women…this year she started back up middle school Bible study, encouraging the high schoolers to lead the meetings.

  • She has an exceptional  teaching method for her dancers at JEDC. At the top of that teaching method is kindness towards all, especially a dance competitor. As a group, they win the award for most caring and compassionate towards each other and the dancers of other dance companies. Not only does she have superb dance technique, but also has faith in self and in fellow dancers. Best wishes, Jodi!!!

  • She makes me a better dancer. She is nice and always believes in me. I always feel safe to learn with Ms. Jodi. I love her” -Kinsley Age 7. As a mother of a young competitive dancer, you worry about so much. Is it too much pressure? Does she need to look a certain way? Is it like dance moms on TV? Jodi Justice is the opposite of all dance teacher stereotypes. She is kind, patient, and ensures all dancers are respectful and their best selves. We consistently win Studio Spirit awards for on and off stage respectful behavior. Jodi organizes a middle school bible study for our dancers at such a critical and difficult school age. But most of all, and as Kinsley noted, she has created a safe space for the youth of our community. She is most deserving.

Jody McClenny

  • The amount she does for the students, families and teachers in Carteret County is often hidden behind the scenes. There is no stronger advocate for educational excellence around!!!

Joe Clarke

  • because no one loves this place better than him. He's teaching his boys to hunt and fish the local woods and waters, and to love the people, the land, and the history and lore of Carteret County.

  • He is a dedicated teacher and coach (football, wrestling, & track) for Croatan High School. I am biased as he is my husband, but the man puts in countless hours away from his family to ensure his students and athletes have the best opportunities. Johnathon goes out of his way to help students grow and succeed, including our son (15) who we adopted and our daughter (2). The dedication and commitment he has for the children in our community is remarkable.

  • because no one was paying attention to losing our Cape Lookout lighthouse which, according to the Carteret County Tourism Bureau, brings in over $35 million to our county.

  • She is the director of Save Cape Lookout Foundation. Her efforts are truly a large reason there are current pressures on our government to preserve our local diamond lady!

  • She is the true definition of a Godly woman and always puts others first. You can find her within the local community, especially her home, Harkers Island, giving back to others, and always ensuring someone else’s needs are met. She is without a doubt sunshine on a cloudy day!

Junior Posey

  • because he is always out working in the community building ramps, fixing houses, helping neighbors cut down trees after hurricanes.

Karen Amspacher

  • Karen has been a voice for the Down East Community for decades, calling attention to the amazing culture, history, and needs of the folks of Down East. She worked tirelessly to restore the Core Sound Museum after Hurricane Florence (while her own home still needs repairs), to record the history of the communities, and preserve the seascape that makes Carteret County what it is.

Karlyn Salter

  • She is an overcomer. She sets goals and achieves them, even with the challenges life throws her way. She worked hard and ran her first 1/2 marathon this year. She is accepting and doesn’t judge. Karlyn is the real deal and a true local.

Kaselun Moore

  • She gives selflessly and consistently! She is an amazing human!

  • She is constantly giving to her community and to others. She lifts others up regularly.

  • Not only are they local nurse practitioners at Carteret Healthcare serving our community;

Kathryn Chadwick

  • She does so much for our school system, especially for our DownEast Community. The campgrounds that she is running with her family are creating jobs, income, and community involvement. She has always been a proactive member of her community and is constantly standing up for what is right. She does it with a caring smile on her face and love in her heart.

  • She is always helping the local schools and donating to schools and sports every chance she gets.

  • Kathryn does more for the community than she will ever admit. She is very involved with the school system and helps raise funds on a regular basis for different things with ECHS. She frequently provides teachers and staff with meals there throughout the school year. Her family works tirelessly to ensure the community of Atlantic is also taken care of in times of distress.

  • Always stands up for children in Carteret County, and supports numerous local charities and events.

Kathryn Metts

  • She is a role model for all. Kind, compassionate, generous, and loyal.

Kate Dixon

  • She pours her heart and soul into empowering our children. She loves our kids as her own and gives them self confidence.

She makes such a huge impact on every family she comes into contact with, and I don’t know a single soul that knows her and doesn’t adore her. I’ve never met anyone more passionate about helping children than her.

  • Lisa is the GM for West Carteret Water. She has been the driving force behind providing a potable drinking source for the residents of western Carteret County. She has been with the company over 30 years and is a great example to women in the water industry by being the first female President to the NC Rural Water Association last year. She is always there for her customers, employees, and family.

Liz Kopf

  • Liz is always allowing non-profits a free venue to raise money. Also, when individuals or groups need assistance, she also provides a venue for them to raise money.

  • For bringing back the Bachelor Auction fundraiser and all the good she does for Beaufort.

She works a full time, demanding job and then volunteers hours upon hours each week to helping control the overpopulation of homeless community cats in Beaufort and Down East Communities! BCCP would not exist without Tomma and our community is so thankful for her!

He does so much for this county than I can keep track of. Almost everyone knows who he is and that is because he has made sure to take care of his community.

  • Wendy is the co-owner of Beaufort Grocery Co. Even though Wendy stays busy with the restaurant, she is very involved in the various community organizations and gives so much back to the community.

  • She works quietly in the background to support so many. She’s the mother of Beaufort downtown restaurants.
